Source code control and VS.Net

One of my tasks for the day had been to migrate our Visual Studio solution from VSS to another SCM software. I was getting up to speed along with my other dev efforts due to which I could not post in the last few days.

As one of our neighborhood teams had already migrated to this SCM s/w the ground work was already in place. And I had decided to try getting this migration smooth and setup of the dev environment in a way which is specific to our dev team.

Of-course I had issues here and there but a fair understanding of how VS.Net interacts with source control systems had helped me a lot. I had to do a hack here / there to get the initial project setup done but as of now I am not finding any issues.

Moving forward I believe once the team starts setting up the solutions from the new source control provider it should cost us only an hour or close to that of dev time.

Other couple of items which were required is a way to switch between source control providers so that in case of a QFE release we can always switch back to the previous version code line from VSS and work on it and once done switch to the current code line.

I wrote a minor utility which basically switches the vs.net source control providers but later on googling gave me a better utility SCCSwitch. The UI is good and I found it can work with any # of registered source control providers on your machine [ my tool switches between VSS and the new SCM :( ]

I have run outta time otherwise I had also planned to take a look at the last release of the Data Access Application Block by the P&G group @ MS. They have packaged few interesting items this time in the block.

1. Unit test case are available with the block
2. Abstract factory pattern based implementation to interact with other db's apart from Sql Server.

- Should go through there is always something to learn from these folks :)

I should really call it off a day complete. Though today had been hectic, interesting and ofcourse with meetings. But I really feel nice to have pulled it off doing something for friends also (hey if you read this dont use a 4 letter word o.k.).

How much I feel incomplete without being in touch with these folks. Sure I need to take a break outta my regular geeky life and pull it together to stay in REGULAR touch with the other side of ME.

Whenever I have to do a small time POC, I just cannot open up vs.net prepare a solution ..... better yet open up notepad, prepare some class, compile, run..

I was hooked to doing this till I found the SnippetCompiler. If any one does what I described above. The snippet compiler is a MUST have tool in their toolbox/ toolbar ;)
